The Not-so-Good

There are some things one might avoid...

The Marshmallow Salad and The Kraft Party

My daughter Steph came across these early in her introduction to Canadian life. Marshmallow Salad comes both in savoury with vegetables and sweet with fruit. If you like Jel-O OK but the combination is somewhat revolting! She was excited that son Jacob was invited to a Craft Party and wondered what wonderful things the children would create........... but on seeing the Birthday tea of dish after dish coloured that particular yellow of Kraft processed cheese she was despondent. Jacob, the vegetarian who doesn't eat vegetables, was delighted!!

The Avocado Pear and The Palm-Oil Stew

The first avocado I encountered was at a luncheon(sic) party in Sierra Leone where the family was invited ashore from the ship taking us to Nigeria. The avocado was not ripe and everyone watched me struggling to eat this horrible thing - every spoonful forced down!

Palm-Oil Stew is rich and greasy and when mixed with Dry Martinis American Style (wave the vermouth bottle over the gin, stir and keep in fridge to ensure minimum ice required!) the result can be disastrous....

The Pork Chops

A long, long time ago my big sister invited me to Accra (then Gold Coast now Ghana) to help after the birth of her second son. She was just home from hospital when I arrived and when I asked what I could do she said "There are pork chops for supper". I went to the kitchen and found the chops in the fridge. Then I had a think...... I had no idea what to do and had to go back to her room and ask "How do you cook pork chops?????" Luckily I have improved my cooking since.
