To protect backups you could password protect them so any important information is less likely to be accessed. You should also keep them in a safe place which you will be able to remember so they don't go missing or get stolen. Incase of fire or something which effects your whole house it is best to keep your backups in another house or at your parents work so one copy stays safe.
