Open Source Internet Browsing
The best known open source internet browser is Mozilla Firefox, no suprise it is also the best open source internet browser. It has managed to secure a massive percentage of the internet browsing market, Mozilla have between 20% and 30% of the internet browser market. They are only beaten by Internet Explore who have conquered the biggest percented of the market by taking an almighty 50% to 60% of the market.
Mozilla Firefox History
Mozilla Firefox is only one branch of Mozilla's project. The original purpose of the project was to give people free software that gives the user a choice of how they experience internet.
The Mozilla project was created in 1998 using netscape browser suite source code, this browser was revolutionary it was designed to use thousands of internet programs. It made an online community that members could add and contribute to make new functions and features it also enabled people to become involved the active management of the project and help decide the direction Mozilla was going in.
In 2002 the first major version of mozilla was released however at this time 90% of the internet browsing market was controlled by Internet Explorer. As a result no one noticed the release of Mozilla Phoenix (later renamed Firefox), but the goal of creating the best browsing experience for the widest range of people was now alive.
In 2003 Mozilla foundation was relased and this was a non profitable organisation dedicated to running the day to day dealings of the mozilla project. It relied on donations from people to keep this service going. Mozilla foundation was dedicated to promoting openness, innovation and opportunity on the internet by releasing software that was free, fast and ahead of the times making browsing easier and better for everyone, by making new softwares such as Firefox and thunderbird. Mozilla Firefox 1.0 burst on to the scene in 2004 with 100 million downloads in under a year, ever since it new versions have been released every year.
Why did I chose to do Mozilla Firefox as my web page project?
This is the browser we use at home, this project gave me the chance to compare Mozilla to our old browser which was Internet Explorer. By doing research i have learned where Mozilla started and by who, a little about the differences between the browsers but most of all what it means to be an Open Source browser and how they survive. i feel that we have benefitted greatly just by the speed of Mozilla Firefox.
