ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES - LEVEL 1 - UNIT BANK

Pupils have to demonstrate competence against the assessment criteria from their day to day work and the teacher assessor has o verify that they are competent in relation to the general level descriptor using indicative assessment criteria. TLM's external moderator will check the judgements and the quality of the evidence and provide feedback. This process is not graded, the intention is that it is a flexible way of checking basic practical competence in the subject at the qualifications ramework level.
Once this is secure the pupil becomes eligible to take a grading exam. If the coursework is secure the candidate should at least get sufficient marks on the grading exam to get a pass grade but it is not inevitable. If many pupils pass the coursework but fail to achieve a pass grade overall it implies that the coursework assessment is not sufficiently rigorous and should be adjusted accordingly.
LEVEL 1, UNIT 1 - THE UNDERSTANDING OF ROCKET DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE (3 CREDITS)
The overall focus for learning in this unit is to explore the ways that rockets can be made to fly. It looks at some of the history of rockets and the changes of materials over time as well as the main forces that need to be understood and overcome for success. It allows learners to design and create their own rockets of different types and the explore materials and their overall effects. The unit also explores some of the impacts on society and the possible future use for their designs.

LEVEL 1, UNIT 2 - THE UNDERSTANDING OF MICROSATELLITE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE (3 CREDITS)
The overall focus for learning in this unit is to understand the environment and materials required to make microsatellites and to appreciate the overall purpose. It also introduces more of the design and development principles from unit 1 in a different area.
Unit Criteria
LEVEL 1, UNIT 3 - THE EXPLORATION OF ROBOTICS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (3 CREDITS)
The overall focus for learning in this unit is to to investigate some of the ways robots and robotics are used around us, including industrial and private use. Learners are encouraged to explore and control robots to see how and why they work in order to understand what else they could be used for. There is also an ethical dimension where many studies believe that automation will replace most people’s jobs in the coming years. Is this a good or bad thing? Does it matter?
Unit Criteria
LEVEL 1, UNIT 4 - WORKING WITH AND UNDERSTANDING UNMANNED VEHICLES (3 CREDITS)
The overall focus for learning in this unit is to allow learners to research and understand the history and development of unmanned vehicles and to see the range of uses across all sectors. They can then explore how to make their own devices and think about the materials and processes required for success. As with all the units, what are some of the consideration of these devices, for example driverless cars and lorries.
