1. The learner will combine single words, signs or symbols to communicate meaning to a range of listeners.
 
1.1 I can combine single words, signs or symbols to communicate meaning.
The learner is able to use a preferred method to communicate meaning, for example, ‘Mummy gone’ or ‘more drink’.

1.2 I can communicate with a range of listeners.
The learner is able to use a preferred method to communicate with more than one listener.
 
Evidence: Direct observation, planning records and documentation of day to day activities.
 
1.3 I can use "yes" and "no" to indicate a need or preference.
The learner is aware of the meaning of the terms 'yes' and 'no' and can use them in indicating a need or demonstrating a preference, for example, saying 'yes' when asked if the would like a drink.

2. The learner will make attempts to repair misunderstandings without changing the words used.
 
2.1 I can repeat, when misunderstood.
The learner is able to repeat what they have communicated when they have been misunderstood, for example, showing a specific sign again, or repeating a word.

2.2 I can attempt to repair misunderstandings.
The learner is able to attempt to use alternative means to help other understand them, for example, repeating a word with a different intonation or facial expression.

3. The learner will use a vocabulary of over 50 words.

The learner is able to demonstrate knowledge of over 50 words, signs or symbols, using a preferred method of communication.
