Assessment for the full attainment range without tiering - it's not necessary!

Qualifications reform may be unending, but from chaos comes opportunity. Ian Lynch's extensive experience of assessment coupled with an in-depth knowledge of internet technologies has resulted in an ICT assessment framework that is genuinely innovative. At ASA we came across TLM's innovative IT certification while researching support for our inclusive curriculum strategy. For the first time we found a course flexible enough to support our emphasis on inclusion whilst stretching the highest attaining, thereby enabling us to match our provision to the needs of individual learners. We have had exhaustive experience over the years of just about every IT qualification, from GNVQ through GCSE, DiDA, OCR Nationals, the IT Diploma, i-media and digital cre8or. TLM's framework enables us to cover the entire curriculum range with a single and consistent assessment method matched specifically to our learners' needs. We can now tailor curriculum content to cover multimedia, computer science, and even engineering through the use of BIM (Building Information Management) software. This flexibility enables us to give all students courses that they find relevant and motivating.

The framework is also easy to administer; gone is much of the administrative bureaucracy associated with coursework, which gives teachers more time to teach rather than organise paper. We can include SEN learners with Entry Level certificates, KS3 learners with Level 1 and even provide Level 3 units for our high flyers. IT across the curriculum has always been notoriously difficult to manage because of the assessment implications but with TLM's page 3 framework it can be achieved incrementally, realistically and sustainably:
  • We can plan for the digital literacy, IT and computer science dimensions of the new national curriculum for ICT in a single consistent framework that is nationally and internationally recognised.
  • Our students gain headline league table points through the award because it is judged to be a "High Quality Equivalent"
  • It will save us money in examination board fees
  • It is directly complementary to the Modern Baccalaureate curriculum framework that we follow.
In summary, I can thoroughly recommend that you read this book and take a step towards supporting raised attainment and reduced costs.
