What is a virus?A virus is a software that spreads from computer to computer and causes severe damage. It can interfere with the computer operation. Its a program that can produce copies of itself and can insert them into other files and programs that allow it to cause damage. Viruses can be spread by attachments in email messages or instant messages. The viruses can disguise themselves as email attachments or funny images, greeting cards or audio and video files. What damage can they do?The damage they do is:: destroying data on your computer as well as deleting it or corrupting it. Computer viruses can prevent you from being able to use your computer. Some viruses can damage specific parts of the computer meaning the mechanism of it so that it makes it difficult to insert and remove disks. Some viruses can disable programs that deliver updates and remove viruses. It can close an anti virus program if its running. They could also block access to anti virus websites so that the virus stays on your computer. How can you prevent viruses?Most people find it easier to install anti virus program so that they won't have viruses interfere with their computer system and damage things on it. This can be a very good thing as they wouldn't have to worry about viruses because they have the anti virus software. Another way is to keep your computer current with the latest updates and anti virus tools. You should also stay aware of any recent threats and run your computer as a standard user and not as an administrator. What are the different types of viruses?Resident viruses: This type of virus can interrupt the computer system, corrupting files and programs that have been opened, closed, copied and renamed. Overwrite viruses: This type of virus deletes information that is stored in the files that it infects. Boot virus: Affects the boot sector of a floppy disk and hard drive. This is the part of the disk that information is stored with a program that makes it hard to start the computer using the disk. Polymorphic Virus: These viruses have the ability to encode themselves in a different way, every time they infect a system. By doing this, it makes it impossible for anti viruses to find them using signature or string searches. |
